The same addresses, the same content#
The safest way to change platform is not to change the addresses. Then Google does not need to learn anything new about which page is which. When addresses do change, every old address should be redirected permanently (301) to its new one, according to Google's advice on moving [1].
- ✓ The same addresses
- ✓ The same redirects (301)
- ✓ The same robots.txt
- ✓ The same titles and descriptions
- ✓ The same canonical addresses
- ✓ The same headings and body text
- ✓ The same language versions
- ✓ Structured data is kept
The check before the switch#
Before your domain is pointed to us, we compare every address in the original with the copy: status code, redirects, title, description, canonical address, robots rules, main heading, language versions, structured data and body text. If we find an address that is missing or a redirect that has been lost, the switch is stopped until it is fixed.
The only thing that may differ is what we have added where something was missing (title, description, an H1 around the same text, structured data). Every such change is reported in the report.
How long does a move take for Google?#
According to the times Google has reported, a move with changed addresses usually takes 1-3 months and sometimes over a year [2]. If we only change the platform and keep the addresses, it is not a move in Google's sense, and that is why we keep them.
